An external coil spring compressor uses claws or hooks that grip the outside coils of the spring — the standard for most coil-over-strut suspensions on cars and light commercials (MacPherson struts, etc.). An internal cup-and-ram compressor fits inside a strut cup or spring cage from above and below — used where external claws can't be fitted (some commercial-vehicle and heavy-vehicle suspensions, particularly with cup-mounted or canister-mounted spring designs).

Spring pre-load varies widely with vehicle weight and spring rate. For light cars (compact and supermini class), 1-2 tonne compressors are sufficient. For mid-size cars, light commercials, and SUVs, 3-5 tonnes is the working range. For HGVs, agricultural tractors, and heavy plant with high-rate springs, 5-15 tonne hydraulic compressors with safety cages are required. Always check the rated capacity exceeds the spring's expected pre-load.

For removal: a bushing puller with the correct cup size (sized to the bush outer diameter) is fitted across the bush, and a centre-screw or hydraulic ram draws the bush out of the housing. For fitment: a hydraulic press or specific bushing-fit kit, with cups sized to the bush and the housing, presses the new bush home squarely. Always lubricate the bush outer surface with the manufacturer-specified fitting compound (typically a soap-based lubricant — never grease, which can attack rubber bush compounds).

Highly recommended for any high-pre-load strut. A safety cage encloses the spring during compression and decompression — if the compressor or spring fails, the cage contains the released energy. For light-duty car spring work with low-rate springs, an external claw compressor used with care is the working standard. For high-rate, high-pre-load springs (sport, performance, heavy-vehicle), or where the strut design makes claw-fitting difficult, a safety-caged compressor or stand-mounted cage is the appropriate choice.
