Plug size and reach are two separate figures and both have to be right. Size is the hex on the plug, running 10mm, 14mm, 16mm and 18mm here. Reach is how far down the well the tool has to go, and a socket that fits the plug but stops short of it is no use. Both figures are stated per tool rather than one being implied by the other.
Long reach tools at 300mm exist because modern plug wells are deep. On a transverse engine under a plastic cover, the plug can sit further down than any standard socket and extension will comfortably reach without going in at an angle. A socket that reaches the plug but sits at an angle rounds the hex rather than turning it.
Angle is the other problem, and a flexible wrench solves it. Where the plug cannot be approached straight on, a flexible shaft lets the socket sit square on the plug while the handle is turned from wherever there is room. Draper hold flexible wrenches at 10mm and 14mm alongside the long reach bodies.
Coil-on-plug systems add a step before the plug is reached at all, and a coil puller draws the coil out of the well without pulling on the loom. Oxygen sensor wrenches with a flexi-handle at 22mm cover the sensor in the same exhaust system.
