An engine support beam spans the engine bay (sitting on the wing channels) and supports the engine from above with a chain or strap — used while the engine is still in the bay, typically when removing the gearbox out the bottom or working underneath. An engine crane (also called engine hoist) is a wheeled hydraulic crane with a vertical arm — used to lift the engine completely out of the bay once it's unbolted from the chassis and gearbox. Use a transmission jack — a wheeled hydraulic jack with a tilting head plate sized to support a gearbox. The transmission rests on the jack head, the operator slides the jack under the gearbox, raises the head until contact, and then unbolts the gearbox from the engine and chassis. The tilting head allows alignment with the bell-housing during removal-and-refit. Match the jack capacity to the transmission weight — typical 250-500kg for cars and light commercials; 500kg+ for HGV and agricultural transmissions.
