A set covers a range of profiles in one cut grade, so the grade is chosen against how much metal has to come off before the profiles are considered at all. A set in the wrong grade is a set of files that either take too long or leave the wrong finish. Profile coverage matters second, since a set with the right grade and a missing profile is still usable.
Warding files are thin in section, which is what lets them enter a slot or a keyway that a standard file cannot. Held as 4 and 6 piece sets at 100mm with handles fitted, they suit lock, key and small mechanism work rather than general filing. Section thickness is stated alongside length, which is what tells you whether the file will enter the slot at all.
Handles are the part most often missing. Files are sold on the tang, and a needle file handle takes several files in turn rather than one being fitted permanently, which is how a set of needle files is actually used. A handle also lets a file be pushed properly rather than held on a bare tang.
Sharpening stones sit on the same leaf because a file eventually stops being the tool for the job and an edge has to be restored instead.
