Thread standard comes before size and the two are not interchangeable. Metric, BSP and imperial threads differ in pitch and flank angle, so a metric tap will not cut a usable BSP thread even where the diameters look similar. Establishing the standard first avoids a hole that no fastener fits. The flank angle is the part that cannot be seen by eye, which is why the standard is read rather than guessed.
Taps cut internal threads and dies cut external ones, and each needs a holder that will take it. Tap wrenches are sized on the square drive of the tap shank, running 2.50 to 12.00mm, 4.25 to 14.40mm, 4.25 to 17.70mm and 6.80 to 23.25mm on the bar type wrenches here.
Wrench action changes how the tap is turned. A bar type wrench gives even pressure from both hands, which matters when starting a tap square. A ratchet wrench turns without repositioning, which is what allows a tap to be run where there is no room for a full turn of the bar. Ratchet tap wrenches here cover M3 to M8 and M5 to M12 by the tap size rather than by drive.
Die holders are sized on the outside diameter of the die rather than the thread, at 13/16 inch and 1 inch on the three screw pattern holders here.
