Petrol and diesel compression testers are not interchangeable and the difference is pressure. A diesel engine compresses far harder than a petrol one, so a petrol gauge reads off the end of its scale and a diesel gauge lacks resolution at petrol pressures. Reading the fuel type on the kit before anything else avoids a gauge that cannot give a usable figure.
Adaptor coverage is what makes a kit usable on the vehicles that actually arrive. The adaptor screws into the plug or injector hole, and those threads vary widely. An 8 piece petrol kit covers common threads; a 42 piece master kit covers petrol and diesel across a much wider spread. A compression figure is also only meaningful against the figures from the other cylinders on the same engine.
Compression and leakage answer different questions. A compression test says how much pressure a cylinder builds. A leakage test puts air in and listens for where it escapes, which tells you whether the loss is at the valves, the rings or the head gasket. A digital petrol kit at 8 pieces records the reading rather than needing it noted at the engine.
Commercial vehicles need their own kit again, at 13 pieces for diesel, because the adaptors and the pressures differ from car diesels. Oil pressure and vacuum test kits sit alongside for the readings taken at the same time.
