For non-OEM identification, measure the bore and rod diameter precisely and match to standard sizes; some specialist cylinders have non-standard dimensions and need OEM-specific kits.

Match seal material to the hydraulic fluid and operating temperature. For mineral-oil hydraulic fluid (the most common in plant equipment) at standard temperatures (-30°C to +90°C): NBR (nitrile rubber) is the standard. For higher temperatures (90°C+) or aggressive fluids (some biodegradable and synthetic hydraulic fluids): FKM/Viton. Rod seals are fitted between the rod and the cylinder gland — preventing internal hydraulic fluid leaking past the rod when the cylinder is pressurised.
