Three measurements: (1) cylinder bore (the inside diameter of the cylinder barrel — measured at the cylinder mouth or read from the OEM specification); (2) rod diameter (the chrome-plated piston rod that extends from the cylinder); (3) cylinder design (single-acting or double-acting — affects which seals are needed). The OEM part number is the fastest match. For non-OEM identification, measure the bore and rod diameter precisely and match to standard sizes; some specialist cylinders have non-standard dimensions and need OEM-specific kits.

Match seal material to the hydraulic fluid and operating temperature. For mineral-oil hydraulic fluid (the most common in plant equipment) at standard temperatures (-30°C to +90°C): NBR (nitrile rubber) is the standard. For higher temperatures (90°C+) or aggressive fluids (some biodegradable and synthetic hydraulic fluids): FKM/Viton. For high-pressure heavy-duty rod seals where wear resistance matters: polyurethane. The compatible fluid types are listed on every seal kit product page.

Rod seals are fitted between the rod and the cylinder gland — preventing internal hydraulic fluid leaking past the rod when the cylinder is pressurised. Piston seals are fitted around the piston inside the cylinder — preventing fluid passing from one side of the piston to the other (preserving the cylinder's force output). Wiper seals (also called dust seals) are fitted at the outside of the cylinder gland — preventing dirt and water from being drawn into the cylinder as the rod retracts. A complete seal kit includes all three plus back-up rings.
