A storage box is bought either to hold things or to keep them, and those are different products. A composite container holds tools dry and portable. A secure box resists being opened by someone who should not be opening it, and that resistance is built into the shell rather than added by a padlock. Adding a lock to a light plastic box does not make it secure, since the shell is what fails rather than the lock.
Capacity sizes the first kind. Composite containers run 40L, 60L and 80L, which covers a kit that moves between jobs. Secure boxes are quoted in dimensions rather than volume because what matters is whether the equipment fits, at 915 x 470 x 590mm and 1220 x 610 x 700mm.
Van boxes are a third case again, shaped to the load space rather than to the tools. A sliding box draws out so the back of it can be reached without climbing in, and a steel van box bolts down so it does not move with the vehicle. Van boxes are also held in steel and in sliding form so the choice follows the vehicle rather than the tools.
