LED site lights have largely replaced halogen — much lower current draw (typical 10-50W LED vs 250-500W halogen for similar lumen output), much longer lamp life (25,000-50,000 hours vs 200-2,000 hours), no heat, and instant-on with no warm-up. COB-LED (chip-on-board) is a more compact LED technology giving higher light density per area — useful for tripod-mounted area lights. For all new installations, LED is the practical choice; halogen remains for replacement fitments only.

Rechargeable lithium-ion site lights are mobile, self-contained, and ideal for mobile-service work, off-grid sites, and short-duration tasks. Run-times are typically 4-12 hours per charge depending on brightness setting. 110V site-transformer-fed lights provide continuous output for the whole working day — required on UK construction sites under HSE/CDM guidance and the standard for fixed-position illumination of large work areas. Most contractors carry both.

Match output to the work area size and lighting need. Task and bench lighting: 1,000-3,000 lumens for close-up work. General workshop bay lighting: 5,000-10,000 lumens per bay. Large area illumination (construction site, large workshop, vehicle wash bay): 10,000-30,000 lumens per fixture, with multiple fixtures spaced for even coverage. Tripod-mounted area lights are typically the highest-output portable variant — up to 30,000+ lumens.

IP54 (dust-protected, splash-resistant) is the minimum for outdoor and site use. IP65 (dust-tight, water-jet resistant) is appropriate for harsh-conditions outdoor work, exposed sites, and any application with regular hose-down or rain exposure. IP67/IP68 is needed for deep-water exposure or full-immersion applications (rare in standard site lighting). The IP rating is listed on every site light product page.
