For 4x4s, vans, and light commercials (3-5 tonnes gross), 3-tonne pairs (6-tonne combined) are standard. For HGVs, plant equipment, and agricultural machinery (5+ tonnes), 6-tonne or 12-tonne pairs are needed. Always size above the vehicle's gross weight, never below it. Axle stands have a minimum height (the lowest the saddle sits) and a maximum height (fully extended). Match the maximum height to the lifted height of your vehicle at the support point — if the chassis rail sits 380mm off the ground when fully lifted on a trolley jack, the axle stand maximum must reach at least 380mm. Always position stands on the vehicle's designated jacking points or chassis rails — these are the structural points designed to take static load. The vehicle handbook lists jacking-point locations.
