Helicoil-pattern wire-thread inserts: spring-wire coil installed in an over-sized tapped hole, restoring the original thread size. Inexpensive, well-proven, suited to most thread-repair jobs. Time-Sert-pattern solid-thread inserts: solid-bushing inserts with a flange, more permanent than wire inserts, suited to high-load and aluminium-block applications (cylinder-head studs, transmission cases). Solid-thread repair is more expensive but more permanent. Match the repair to the application — Helicoil for general work, Time-Sert for high-load and critical applications.

HSS (high-speed steel) is the workshop standard for tap and die work — sufficient hardness and edge retention for cutting threads in mild steel, aluminium, brass, and most general workshop materials. HSS-Co (cobalt-alloy HSS — typically 5-8% cobalt) is harder and retains its edge at higher cutting temperatures — required for cutting threads in stainless steel, hardened alloys, and exotic metals. For trade workshop use covering general materials, HSS is sufficient; for specialist work in stainless and harder alloys, HSS-Co gives longer tool life.

Taps come in three styles for different stages of cutting. Taper (also called first or starting tap): leading 8-10 threads tapered, easy to start in a fresh hole, used for the first pass. Intermediate (second tap): 3-5 threads tapered, deeper thread cut, used for the middle pass through-holes. Bottoming (also called plug tap): 1-2 threads tapered, full-form thread cut to the bottom, used for the final pass and for cutting threads to the bottom of blind holes. A complete tap set has all three; for through-holes only, taper tap may be sufficient.

Yes — tap wrenches in the standard sizes (small for fine taps, T-handle for medium, double-handle for larger taps), die holders (round-die holders in the standard die-diameter range), thread-cleaning chasers and thread files (which restore damaged threads without removing the fastener), thread-cleaning brushes, and the matching cutting fluid and tap-and-die lubricants are available across the thread-cutting accessory range. Always use cutting fluid when cutting threads — extends tool life significantly.

Every product is backed by our Fit Guarantee. If a part is incompatible with your machine, you can return it hassle-free. For damaged-on-arrival items, report within 24 hours with photographs to [email protected] — we will arrange collection. For other returns, email us first to obtain a Return Merchandise Number before sending. Returns are accepted within 30 days of purchase, in original packaging, on UK orders. A restocking fee may apply on returns where the buyer has changed their mind. Refunds are issued to the original payment method once the return is inspected.

Delivery time depends on the product, your destination, and availability — the estimated time for any item appears on the product page, and "Check where we deliver" confirms coverage for your postcode before you order. Next-day delivery is available on most products; the option appears at checkout when applicable. We deliver across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Use the country selector at checkout to confirm coverage and delivery options for your destination.

Thread Cutting Repair

Within Workshop Tools, Thread Cutting Repair covers the tap and die sets, thread-repair tools, and thread-rebuild tools used in workshop, fabrication, and vehicle-repair work — covering metric and imperial tap and die sets (for cutting new threads in fresh material), thread-repair kits (Helicoil-pattern, Time-Sert-pattern, and similar wire-thread inserts for repairing damaged threads), thread-cleaning tools (chasers, thread files, thread-cleaning brushes), and the wider range of thread-cutting and thread-restoration tools used in trade workshops. Parts for Machines supplies thread cutting repair tools across the trade and professional ranges, covering the comprehensive size and pitch range used in vehicle, plant-equipment, and general workshop work — metric coarse (M3-M30+), metric fine, BSP and BSPT (British Standard Pipe), UNC and UNF (Unified National Coarse and Fine), and the specialist thread-repair systems used in aluminium and soft-material applications. We are an authorised distributor and seller of Sealey and Draper across the thread cutting repair range. Sealey covers the broadest selection — comprehensive tap and die sets across the metric and imperial size ranges, thread-repair kits for the common damaged-thread sizes, thread-cleaning tools, and the matched tap wrenches and die holders. Draper extends the range with workshop and trade variants. Product pages list the tool type (tap, die, repair-insert kit, chaser, file), the thread system (metric coarse, metric fine, BSP, BSPT, UNC, UNF, NPT), the size range (specific sizes within the system), the construction (HSS — high-speed steel — for general use; HSS-Co cobalt-alloy HSS for harder materials; carbon steel for budget hand-cutting work), the tap type (taper for starting; intermediate for second pass; bottoming/plug for blind holes), and any specific finish or coating. Trade pricing on bulk and trade-pack orders is available; contact the team via WhatsApp 07754288583.
