FAQs

Brassed steel is steel wire with a brass coating, not solid brass. It keeps the stiffness of steel for removing rust, scale and old paint, and the coating helps the wire resist corrosion in storage. Brassed brushes here include a 250mm plastic-handled brush, sets of 3, 5 and 8 pieces, and a display box of 24.

The scraper is a blade on the nose of the brush for lifting flaking paint and heavy deposits before the wire finishes the surface, so one tool does both jobs. Scraper brushes here come with steel fill at 260mm or with stainless steel fill. Brushes without a scraper are listed at 250mm, 255mm and 260mm.

Sets give a choice of fill or head size. Brassed sets come as 3, 5 or 8 pieces, a miniature 3 piece set has steel, nylon and brass brushes, and there are 2 piece nylon and crimped steel sets and a 3 piece auto engineer's set. An 18 piece rotary tool brush set is for use in a rotary tool, not by hand.

A lead dressing tool is used to beat and smooth sheet lead into shape around flashings, valleys and roof details without cutting it. The hacking or lead knife cuts sheet lead to size and can also be struck to chop out old putty. Both are single items on this page, not part of a set.

Both are for spreading bitumen, tar and similar roofing coatings. The long handled tar brush gives extra reach across larger areas and keeps your hand further from the coating, and the short handled tar brush gives more control on edges, upstands and small repairs. Tar brushes are generally treated as consumables, since these coatings are difficult to clean out of the bristles.

A roofer's square is a triangular layout tool for marking square and angled cuts on rafters and roofing timber and for checking pitch angles. The one listed measures 178 x 180mm, compact enough to carry on site. Measuring tool sets of 4, 5 and 6 pieces, with items such as a vernier caliper, micrometer, square and rule, are also here.

Roofing Tools

Roofing Tools contains one page, Brushes, which is made up mainly of hand wire brushes. The range includes steel, stainless steel, brassed steel and crimped wire brushes, wire brush sets, miniature and auto engineer's brush sets, nylon brush sets and wire brushes with an integrated scraper. Roofing items include tar brushes, a lead dressing tool, a hacking or lead knife, a roofing hammer and a roofer's square, and measuring tool sets are also listed. Brands include Sealey and Draper. Choose the brush fill to suit the surface and the level of cleaning needed: steel wire for heavy rust and scale, brassed steel for lighter cleaning, stainless steel where the workpiece should not be contaminated by carbon steel, and nylon for softer materials. Brush sets offer several head sizes for different areas.
