A soft faced hammer strikes hard without marking, and the face material sets both how hard and how soft. Copper is softer than steel so it deforms rather than the component. Rawhide is softer again. Nylon sits between them and does not shed material at all. The face is chosen against what is being struck rather than how hard the blow needs to be.
Most of these hammers carry two different faces, one at each end, which is the point of the design. A copper and rawhide hammer gives a firm blow from one end and a gentler one from the other without changing tools mid-job. Nylon is also the only face here that leaves nothing behind on the component at all.
Face material is consumable by design. Copper and rawhide faces wear and mushroom in use and are replaced rather than dressed, which is what keeps the hammer working and is why replacement faces are held separately. Sealey hold copper faced hammers at 1.75lb, 2.75lb and 4.3lb on hickory shafts.
Head weight runs 12oz and 1lb through 1.25lb, 1.5lb, 1.75lb, 2.25lb, 2.75lb, 3.5lb and 4.3lb. Hickory shafts run through the range, and several of the hammers here are stated as made in the UK. Send the component to 07754288583 on WhatsApp. Sykes hold a 12oz soft face hammer at the light end for fine assembly work. Hickory is used throughout because it absorbs the shock a soft face is meant to reduce rather than transmitting it.
