EN 388 is the European standard for protective gloves against mechanical risks. The rating shows four numbers (e.g., 4-3-2-2) covering: (1) abrasion resistance (0-4, higher better); (2) blade cut resistance (0-5, higher better); (3) tear resistance (0-4); (4) puncture resistance (0-4). A modern update adds a fifth letter (A-F) for impact-cut resistance using the TDM-100 method. For general workshop work, 3-2-2-2 minimum is recommended; for sheet-metal handling, 4-3 or higher cut rating; for glass and blade handling, 5 or A-F. The rating is on every glove product page.

Welding gloves are heat-resistant gauntlets specified to EN 407 (the standard for thermal protection) — the rating gives flame, contact-heat, convective-heat, radiant-heat, splash, and large-splash resistance scores. For MIG and MMA welding (significant spatter and radiant heat), full EN 407 spec gloves with split-leather construction and reinforced palm and back are standard. Nitrile-coated polyester or cotton: oil-resistant, chemical-resistant to many workshop fluids, durable, the workshop standard for mechanical work. Latex-coated: cheaper, good grip, but allergenic to some operators and not oil-resistant — used for general handling work. Polyurethane-coated: thinner, more dexterous, suited to fine assembly work but less durable for general workshop use. For mechanical workshop work, nitrile is the practical default; for fine work, polyurethane; latex only where allergy and oil-resistance aren't issues.
