Hinged construction is what separates a tree that goes up in minutes from one that takes an evening. The branches are attached to the pole and fold down against it, so the tree is assembled by opening it out rather than by fitting each branch into a numbered socket. It also means the shape of the tree is the same every year rather than depending on how it was built.
That matters at both ends of the season. Putting up a hinged tree is a matter of standing the sections and letting the branches down. Taking it down is the same in reverse, with nothing to sort, count or lose between years.
Height is stated in both feet and centimetres because both are used: 5ft at 150cm, 6ft at 180cm and 7ft at 210cm. The figure is the tree rather than the tree plus a topper, and ceiling height has to allow for what goes on top of it. Both figures are given on every tree so the height can be checked in whichever unit the room was measured in.
Diameter matters as much as height in a room where the tree has to stand clear of furniture and a door. A taller tree is also wider at the base, so the floor space needed rises with the height rather than only the ceiling clearance.
