The blade has to match the knife body, and hooked, straight and snap-off segment blades are not interchangeable between them. A body takes one blade format, so the knife already owned decides which blades can be bought rather than the other way round. Checking the body before ordering blades takes a moment and saves a pack that will not fit.
Blade type follows the material as much as the body. A straight blade cuts card, film and sheet. A hooked blade pulls through carpet, roofing felt and anything that would ride up over a straight edge. Both are held in packs of 5 and 10 because they are consumed. A hooked blade also cuts on the pull rather than the push, which changes how the cut is controlled.
Snap-off segment blades work differently again, giving a fresh edge by breaking off the dull section rather than replacing the whole blade. Width runs 9mm, 18mm and 25mm, and wider blades are stiffer and cut deeper without flexing in the cut. Segments are snapped off with pliers rather than by hand, since the broken edge is sharp.
Putty and joint knives sit on the same leaf as the flexible blades used for filling and finishing rather than cutting. A putty knife at 2 inches and 50mm spreads and shapes; a joint knife is wider and more flexible again.
