For smaller properties, frequent stop-start use, and noise-sensitive areas, modern lithium-battery units are the practical choice — quiet, instant-start, low-maintenance, with battery platforms that share across multiple tools. Mains-electric units are cheapest but tethered — only suitable for smaller properties within cable reach. Most professional landscapers run a mixed fleet.

Three dimensions match the chain to the bar and the saw: chain pitch (the distance between drive-link rivets, typically 3/8" or 0.325"), gauge (the drive-link thickness — 1.3mm, 1.5mm, or 1.6mm common), and number of drive links (counts the chain length to fit the bar). All three are stamped on the original chain or printed in the operator manual. For the bar, length is the key matching dimension. Match all these specs and the chain fits any saw using the same pitch-gauge combination — chains are not brand-specific.

Always check the operator manual or the engine cap — modern engines from the major manufacturers commonly run 50:1 (50 parts unleaded fuel to 1 part two-stroke oil), older designs may run 25:1 or 32:1. Use a JASO FC- or FD-rated two-stroke oil for cleaner burn and modern emissions compliance — JASO FB is the basic mineral grade for older designs. Pre-mix accurately using a marked measuring jug; over-oiling causes carbon buildup, under-oiling causes engine seizure.

Service parts — air filters, spark plugs, drive belts, blades, ignition coils — are available for the majority of major-brand garden power tools, including older models. Search by the model code on the engine or chassis tag. If the model is not listed but the engine is a generic Honda, Briggs & Stratton, or similar small-engine unit, parts may still be available against the engine code rather than the tool model.
