Mains-powered fixed lighting (bay flood lights, ceiling-mounted strip lights) gives permanent illumination at lower running cost — the workshop default for bay and store-room lighting. Rechargeable lighting (LED inspection lamps, rechargeable site towers) covers mobile and remote-work scenarios where mains is unavailable or inconvenient — handheld inspection, mobile service vans, and outdoor work. Many workshops use both — mains for permanent installations, rechargeable for portable use.

For general bay lighting, 8,000-15,000 lumens per bay is the workshop standard — sized for a single technician bay around 4×6m. For high-detail work (electronics, paint inspection, fine assembly) double that and aim for 20,000+ lumens with high colour-rendering (CRI 80+). For outdoor yard and forecourt lighting, site towers from 30,000 lumens upward cover working areas of 100-300 square metres. The lumens output is listed on product pages.

IP44 covers indoor workshop use with occasional splash exposure — adequate for bay lights and most workshop applications. IP65 covers outdoor and yard lighting where rain and washdown exposure is regular — required for site towers and outdoor work lights. IP67 covers full-immersion conditions — used on plant and tractor lighting and any equipment exposed to deep water or pressure-washing. Match the IP rating to the worst-case exposure the light will see.

LED workshop lighting offers four advantages over halogen: longer life (20,000-50,000 hours versus 1,000-2,000 hours for halogen), lower power draw (typically 50-70% less power for the same lumens), instant cold-start (no warm-up period), and lower running heat (safer in confined spaces and around fuel and oil work). The trade-off is higher purchase cost — but LED running cost is materially lower over the equipment's life, and most workshop ranges have now migrated entirely to LED.
