All three are needed. Diameter (M6, M8, M10, M12 — the metric bolt diameter; or imperial sizes 1/4-inch, 5/16-inch, 3/8-inch, 1/2-inch) plus thread pitch (coarse vs fine — most metric is coarse pitch by default) plus length (measured from under the bolt head to the end of the thread, in millimetres). The strength grade (8.8, 10.9, 12.9) and the head style (hex, socket cap, flange, button) complete the spec. Match all of these for direct replacement.

Grade refers to the bolt's tensile strength. Grade 8.8 has a minimum tensile strength of 800 N/mm² and yield strength of 640 N/mm² — the workshop default for general fastening. Grade 10.9 has tensile 1,000 N/mm² and yield 900 N/mm² — used for high-load joints, cylinder-head bolts, and structural connections. Grade 12.9 is higher again. Match the original bolt's grade for replacement — using a lower grade in a high-load application risks bolt failure. The grade is normally stamped on the bolt head.

Stainless covers wet, marine, and corrosive environments where plated steel would corrode — but stainless has different mechanical properties: lower-strength A2 grade is widely available and suits general-purpose use; higher-strength A4 grade matches plated grade 8.8 in tensile strength. For high-load joints (cylinder heads, flywheel bolts, suspension components), the original plated grade-8.8 (or higher) bolt should not be substituted with A2 stainless without engineering check. Match the strength grade as well as the size.

Match four things: wheel diameter and width (the wheel size — typically 50-200mm diameter on workshop trolleys), load rating per castor (the trolley's rated capacity divided by the number of castors, with 25% margin), mounting type (top-plate bolted to the equipment, threaded-stem screwed in, or socket-mount), and brake type (none, side-brake, total-brake). Wheel material (rubber for floor protection, polyurethane for harder wear, steel for high-temperature applications) is a secondary spec.
