Single-phase 230V is the standard UK mains supply — used by most workshops, garages, and small commercial premises. Single-phase electric heaters typically max out at 3 kW (the practical limit for a 13A socket) or 6 kW (on a dedicated 32A circuit). Three-phase 400V is used for industrial workshops and larger commercial premises — three-phase heaters offer outputs up to 30 kW and beyond. Check your supply type before ordering; the heater plug or terminal type tells you which it is.

Electricity use equals the rated output. A 3 kW heater on full output uses 3 kWh per hour — at 30p/kWh that's 90p/hour, or roughly £7-9 for an 8-hour shift. Thermostat cycling reduces consumption to 50-70% of nameplate over a typical heating period. Electric heating is generally more expensive per kWh of heat than propane or diesel — the trade-off is no fuel logistics, no exhaust, and no flame-failure risk.

Replacement heating elements (sized by length, voltage, and wattage), fan motors, thermal cut-outs, thermostats, and switches are available for the majority of SIP and Sealey electric fan heaters. Standard electric fan heaters are NOT rated for flammable-atmosphere use — heating elements operate at temperatures that can ignite fuel vapours, solvent fumes, or fine dust. For workshops handling fuels, paints, or solvents, use specifically ATEX-rated explosion-proof heaters or vent the workspace before heating. The product page lists ATEX rating where applicable; standard workshop fan heaters are not ATEX-rated.
