A direct-fired heater burns the fuel directly in the airstream that's blown into the workspace — high efficiency (95%+) because no heat is lost to a heat exchanger, but the combustion by-products (carbon dioxide, water vapour, trace contaminants) end up in the workspace, so direct-fired heaters are restricted to well-ventilated and outdoor applications. An indirect-fired heater seals the combustion chamber and uses a heat exchanger to transfer heat to a separate clean airstream — lower efficiency (around 80%) but the heated air is clean, suitable for indoor and confined-space use.

Approximate fuel consumption scales linearly with output. A 30 kW diesel or kerosene heater consumes roughly 2.5-3 litres of fuel per hour at full output. Tank capacity determines run-time — a 50-litre tank gives roughly 16-18 hours of continuous run at full output, longer at part load. Each heater's tank capacity and consumption rate are listed on the product page; calculate run-time by dividing tank capacity by consumption rate.

Most diesel heaters are rated to run on standard road-grade diesel (DERV); agricultural use of red diesel (28-second gas oil) is permitted in agricultural buildings under HMRC rules where the heating is for an agricultural purpose. Always check the heater manufacturer's fuel-grade specification — some heaters require kerosene 28-second specifically and may not run reliably on DERV diesel due to viscosity differences. Annual service is the manufacturer recommendation for most liquid-fuel heaters — typically before the heating season starts. Service includes: replace the fuel filter, replace the spark plug or ignition electrode, clean the burner nozzle, check the photo-cell flame sensor, and inspect the combustion chamber and heat exchanger for soot accumulation. Replacement service kits and individual parts are available for the majority of SIP and Sealey heaters.
