Replace both tracks at the same time wherever possible — track wear is normally roughly even on both sides, and a new track running against a worn track creates uneven wear, drive-mechanism stress, and shorter lifespan on the new track. The exception is when one track has failed early due to a specific damage event (a cut, a bead failure) while the other is in good condition — in that case, replacing the damaged track and assessing the other for wear is reasonable, but expect to replace the second track sooner rather than later.

Standard rubber tracks have a black natural-rubber compound that leaves marks on paved surfaces (tarmac, concrete, polished floors) — fine for construction, agricultural, and outdoor applications. Non-marking tracks use a white or grey synthetic rubber compound that doesn't leave marks — used for indoor work (warehouse, manufacturing-plant maintenance), paved-surface work (urban construction), and applications where surface damage or marking is unacceptable. Non-marking tracks are typically slightly more expensive and have similar wear characteristics to standard tracks.

Rubber track life depends heavily on the operating surface, operator habits, and machine maintenance. As rough guidance: 1500-2500 hours of working life is typical for a rubber track on mixed surfaces; abrasive surfaces (gravel, demolition rubble) shorten this; soft surfaces (soil, lawn, gentle landscaping) extend it. Check tracks for cuts, exposed steel cords, missing lugs, and bead wear regularly — replace before the steel cords become exposed or the bead pattern is worn flat. Operating with a damaged track risks track failure during work.
