Tracked equipment runs both tracks at the same speed under normal operation — the tracks must match in length, tension, and tread depth for straight-line driving and even wear. A new idler on one side and a worn idler on the other puts the new track under different tension than the old, causes uneven track-pad wear, and makes the equipment pull to one side. The same applies to other matched undercarriage components (sprockets, top rollers, bottom rollers, tracks themselves) — always replace as matched sets.

Symptoms of idler failure: visible wear on the idler tread surface (deeper than the manufacturer's wear limit — typically 8-15mm of original tread depth before requiring replacement); play in the idler shaft when rocked back-and-forth (bearing wear); visible cracking on the idler steel structure; uneven track wear or track-walking off the idler. Visual inspection during routine track-tension service is the typical detection — replace at the manufacturer's wear limit, not after failure.

Most plant tracked-equipment uses a grease-track-adjuster mechanism — a high-pressure grease cylinder in the idler-shaft mounting that pushes the idler forward to tension the track. Track tension is adjusted by adding or releasing grease through a grease nipple. Some equipment uses hydraulic-track-adjusters with hydraulic fluid in place of grease. Track tension should be checked routinely (per the equipment manual — typically weekly during service) and adjusted to the manufacturer's specification.
