Modern common-rail injectors have a calibration code (sometimes called IMA, ISA, or correction code) printed or laser-etched on the injector body. This code identifies the injector's specific flow characteristics — small manufacturing variations between injectors are compensated by the ECU using the calibration code. When an injector is replaced, the new injector's calibration code must be programmed into the ECU using the diagnostic tool. Without the update, the ECU uses the old code, the cylinder receives slightly wrong fuel quantity, and the engine runs with cylinder-balance errors and possibly fault codes.

Solenoid injectors: traditional electromagnetic actuator with a solenoid coil and armature. Slower response (typical 0.4-0.8 ms opening time), simpler control electronics, lower cost. Used on most current common-rail engines. Piezo injectors: piezoelectric stack that physically deforms under voltage to operate the injector valve.
