Three matches: (1) operating voltage — 12V or 24V to match the vehicle/equipment electrical system; (2) contact current rating — must equal or exceed the load current of the circuit being switched; (3) pin pattern — 4-pin ISO and 5-pin ISO are the standards on most vehicles, with mini and micro relays using different pin spacings. The pattern is normally stamped on the relay body; the OEM part number on the relay is the fastest match where available.

A 4-pin relay has SPST (single-pole single-throw) contacts — simple on/off switching of one circuit. A 5-pin relay has SPDT (single-pole double-throw) contacts — switches between a normally-closed circuit and a normally-open circuit when the coil energises. 5-pin relays are more flexible and can be used in 4-pin circuits (just leaving the unused pin disconnected); a 4-pin relay cannot replace a 5-pin where both NC and NO outputs are wired.

Match contact rating to the circuit load. For LED auxiliary lighting, 5-10A is sufficient. For driving lights, work-light banks, and beacon circuits, 20-30A.
