The designation on the old bulb and in the handbook — D1S, D2S, D3S, D4S or an R variant — is the whole fitment: the types differ in base, voltage and ballast interface and don't interchange. Match the code exactly; it's the first specification on every product page, with the registration via Ask Simon as backup.

They fade rather than blow: output drops and colour shifts pink or violet over years, often unnoticed until one side is replaced and the mismatch glares. That's why pairs are the standard practice in HID territory — and why a 'dim' xenon headlight is usually an aged bulb, not a dirty lens.

Worth diagnosing before parts: a bulb flickering, colour-shifting or failing to strike on one side can be bulb or ballast, and swapping the suspect bulb to the other side is the classic test — if the fault follows the bulb, it's the bulb. Power the system down fully before touching anything: ballast voltages are dangerous.

Rarely: the headlight's optics were designed around OE-grade arc geometry, and bargain discharge bulbs show their compromises in beam quality, colour consistency and lifespan. The OE-grade ranges cost more per bulb and less per year — the usual lighting arithmetic, amplified by HID prices.
