One face is flat and one is curved, which is why a half round file is the one that serves a fillet and a flat in the same job. Turning the file over rather than reaching for another is what makes it the file most often picked up first on unfamiliar work. The two faces also wear at different rates, which shows which one the file has mostly been used on.
The curved face is worked into an internal radius and the flat face trues the surface either side of it. That means the radius of the curved face has to be smaller than the fillet being worked, or the file bears on its edges and cuts two grooves rather than one curve.
Cut grade runs bastard and second across the sizes here, and the grade is chosen the same way as on any file: how much has to come off before the finish is considered. The curved face wears faster than the flat one because less of it is in contact at any moment. Both grades are held across all four sizes so the size is chosen without changing the grade.
Sizes run 12 x 150mm, 12 x 200mm, 12 x 250mm and 6 x 300mm, with length chosen against the surface and width against what the file has to enter. Files are sold on the tang.
