Variable-speed bandsaws make matching the speed to the material straightforward; fixed-speed bandsaws are typically optimised for mild-steel cutting at moderate thickness.

Match TPI to material thickness using the 'three teeth' rule — at least three teeth should be engaged with the material at any time. For thin sheet (under 3mm), use 18-24 TPI; for general section steel (3-15mm), use 10-14 TPI; for thick bar and section (15-50mm), use 6-10 TPI; for very thick sections (50mm+), use 4-6 TPI.
