Two different tools sit on this leaf and they are often confused. An oscillating multi-tool vibrates a blade through a very small arc, which lets it cut flush against a surface and plunge into the middle of a board. A rotary tool spins a small accessory at high speed for grinding, engraving and fine shaping.
Multi-tools are chosen on power and change system. A 300W corded machine with quick-change holds a blade without a spanner, which matters on a tool where blades swap constantly. Cordless bodies sit on Sealey SV10.8 and SV20, Draper D20 20V and Abracs RG 20V, taking the tool to work that a lead will not reach. Blades fit across brands more often than batteries do, so the platform commits you further than the blade fitting does.
Rotary tools are chosen on accessory count more than on the tool itself, because the accessories are what do the work. Kits here run 40, 49, 50, 57, 111 and 219 pieces, and a larger kit is worth having on a tool that grinds, cuts, polishes and engraves with a different fitting for each.
Smaller bodies cover the fine end. A 4V multifunction screwdriver and cutting tool handles detail work, and a 12V brushless right angle die grinder reaches into places a straight body cannot.
