An impact socket is made from a different steel and a thicker wall than a chrome socket. That is what lets it take the hammer blows an impact wrench delivers without shattering, and it is why a chrome socket must never be used on an impact gun however well it fits. The colour finish is the visible difference but it is the wall thickness and the steel that matter.
Drive size matches the gun and socket size matches the fastener, and both are stated on every listing. The drives here run 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and 1 inch, with the 3/4 inch Draper HI-TORQ ladder covering 17mm, 18mm, 20mm, 23mm and 25mm among the wider size range.
Profile decides how the socket grips. A hexagon profile bears on the flats and is the stronger grip on a fastener in good condition. A bi-hexagon profile has twelve points, which engages at half the angle and suits a socket that has to go on where swing is limited. Bi-hexagon is also more forgiving on a fastener whose corners have already been rounded.
Length is the other variable. A standard socket is shorter and stiffer; a deep socket reaches over a protruding stud or a long thread.
