Roller width and tray have to match, which is easy to overlook when buying them separately. A 9in sleeve in a 4in tray cannot be loaded evenly, and the result shows on the wall as a roller that carries paint on one half of its width. Buying the roller, sleeve and tray together as a system removes the mismatch entirely.
Sleeve material and pile decide the finish more than the paint does. High-density sleeves lay a smooth film on flat surfaces. Polyamide holds more paint and covers faster. Super-micro microfibre gives the finest finish where the surface will show every mark. Pile depth also decides how much texture the roller will follow on an uneven surface.
Width follows the surface. A 4in roller cuts round obstacles and does a small area quickly. A 9in roller is the general size for walls.
